Spaghetti – something almost everyone loves. Hooray, Hooray. It’s literally one of the few things everyone in my household will eat consistently. I may have to modify it somewhat, but still – EVERYONE!! I love this recipe. It is so easy to add a little bit of this or leave something out…. The possibilities are endless. Now that the kids are grown or gone (tears) we can add the grown-up stuff. Black olives, mushrooms, chunks of tomatoes – you name it. I still accommodate the oldest – but who knows – he might or might not show up. He’s definitely learning how to pick out what he doesn’t like. This is his favorite version – full of meat and not lots of icky stuff. I still have to make two types of noodles – but that’s a small detail. Gotta try to keep em all happy! Another great thing about this – It is so easy to double. I’d say triple, but you will need a very, very large pot. Leftovers are actually better. The flavors just keep blending and mingling. I also love being able to use the leftovers later in the week for my Small Batch Lasagna – more deliciousness, or some of my other Italian inspired recipes. This is also one of the things I will freeze to use later – it’s very few and far between for those items. The freezer is pretty much like the land of the lost in my household. I generally try for half ground beef and half Italian sausage, but use whatever is convenient or on sale. For simplicity, brown the meat and the veggies, toss it all in the crockpot and you can come home to a delectable homecooked meal. My crockpot has the removable pot, so I have been known to throw this all together the night before and put it in the crockpot in the morning before we leave for the day. Talk about a time saver. Add a salad and some garlic bread and you are done!
Thick, delicious and easy to modify. Simmer for several hours or (my favorite way) all day in the crockpot for a crowd-pleasing downhome meal. Easily doubled to have leftovers for my Small Batch Lasagna.
- 1/2 lb Ground Beef Lean
- 1/2 lb Italian Sausage
- 1 tbsp Olive Oil
- 1/2 Sweet onion diced
- 1/2 Bell Pepper diced
- 1/2 tsp Garlic chopped
- 1 29 oz can Tomato Sauce
- 1 14.5 oz can Crushed Tomatoes
- 2 15.5 oz cans Italian Style stewed tomatoes
- 1 14.5 oz can Diced Tomatoes
- 1 6 oz can Tomato Paste
- 1/4 tsp Thyme
- 1/4 tsp Basil
- 1 tsp Oregano
- 1 tbsp Italian seasoning
- 1/2 tsp Parsley
- 1/2 tbsp sugar added at end
- optional - Mushrooms, Black Olives and any others of your favorites
In a large skillet, over medium heat, saute onions and bell pepper until softened. Add sausage, breaking it up as it browns. Add hamburger when sausage is about halfway done. Add garlic and Italian seasoning, cook for about another minute or so.
Drain well. Transfer to crockpot if so desired. Add all remain ingredients, except for tomato paste and sugar. Simmer on low for 2-3 hours, stirring often. Or cook in Crockpot for approximately 8 hours on low. Your preference!! I like to set it and forget it. About an hour or so before serving - add 2-3 large tablespoons of the tomato paste. This will thicken it up and add depth to the sauce. Add more if you prefer it thicker and/or richer. About 15 minutes before serving, add sugar. This is not used as a sweetener. It will cut down on the acidity of the canned tomatoes - giving the sauce a smoother flavor.
Serve over your favorite style of noodles and enjoy!!
